I started this painting after moving rainy, green Melbourne to the surreal, modernistic, concrete, desert-city that is Abu Dhabi. Then, having familiarised myself with the instant-home-world of Ikea, and the guilt that came with those necessary yet unhappy-planet purchases, I was feeling a little overwhelmed and homesick. For all the beauty and intrigue of my new city, I greatly missed the vibrant colours and water of down-under and also wanted to create an image which talked about humanity’s increasingly disconnected relationship with our natural environment.
